Aarhus Turn Efficiency into Champions League Victory
SAH Aarhus defeated Montpellier Handball 36–32 in the EHF Champions League, overcoming a difficult start through exceptional shooting efficiency and an outstanding 20-save performance from Magnus Petersen.

Montpellier Handball made the stronger start in Denmark, immediately putting pressure on the home side. The French team established a 4–1 advantage inside the opening five minutes and extended their lead to 5–2, while Aarhus struggled to find consistency in their offensive execution. The visitors continued to control the early stages, maintaining a three-goal advantage at 8–5 after 16 minutes. Montpellier were creating opportunities, but the growing influence of Magnus Petersen in the Aarhus goal gradually began to change the rhythm of the match. Petersen's saves allowed Aarhus to recover possession and build confidence offensively. The Danish side reduced the deficit and eventually levelled the score at 8–8 in the 21st minute. Montpellier responded through Léo Plantin, who scored three consecutive goals for his team to restore a 10–8 advantage. However, Aarhus had started to find greater consistency in attack. A three-goal sequence turned the score from 8–10 into 11–10, giving the home side their first lead of the match. From that moment, Aarhus began to control the closing stages of the first half. Jóhan Hansen and Andreas Rasmussen were particularly effective, helping Aarhus establish a 15–13 advantage at halftime. The second half initially reinforced the Danish side's growing control. After Arthur Lenne reduced the difference to 15–14, Aarhus produced an important four-goal run. With Petersen continuing to make decisive saves, the hosts moved ahead 19–14 in the 38th minute, establishing their biggest advantage of the match at that stage. Montpellier, however, refused to allow the game to escape. The French side improved their attacking efficiency and gradually reduced the difference. Goals from Drevy Paschal, Hugo Monte dos Santos and Pol Valera helped Montpellier recover from five goals behind. In the 44th minute, Agustín Casado completed the comeback to make it 21–21. The match had entered a completely different phase. Both teams exchanged goals, with Montpellier equalising again at 22–22 and 23–23. Aarhus were no longer able to maintain the separation they had created earlier, but their offensive efficiency remained remarkably consistent. Kristján Kristjánsson became increasingly influential during this period, scoring three important goals as Aarhus moved from 22–22 to 25–23. The Danish side gradually rebuilt their advantage, reaching 31–27 in the 54th minute. Montpellier continued to respond, but every attempt to reduce the difference was answered by another Aarhus goal. In the final minutes, goals from Kristjánsson and Jóhan Hansen secured a 36–32 victory. Aarhus finished the second half with an extraordinary 21 goals from 26 shots, representing 81% shooting efficiency, completing a performance in which their offensive precision and goalkeeping proved decisive.

WHAT DECIDED THE GAME
Aarhus’ superior shooting efficiency and Magnus Petersen’s outstanding goalkeeping performance were the decisive factors in their 36–32 victory. Despite Montpellier generating 12 more shots (61 compared with 49), Aarhus converted 73% of their attempts, compared with just 52% for the French side. The difference was particularly significant from nine metres, where Aarhus achieved 57% efficiency against Montpellier’s 17%. Petersen reinforced that advantage with 20 saves and a 40% save rate, preventing Montpellier from capitalising on their additional opportunities. The Danish side were also exceptionally effective after halftime, scoring 21 goals from 26 shots (81%). Even when Montpellier recovered from five goals behind to level the match at 23–23, Aarhus maintained their offensive precision and regained control. Ultimately, better finishing, stronger goalkeeping and greater efficiency in the decisive moments allowed Aarhus to secure the victory despite creating fewer shooting opportunities.
